What Size Nappy Should I Choose?

There are three easy steps to choosing the right size nappy for your baby.

Step 1: How much does my baby weigh? Step 2: What shape is my baby? short and cuddly - average - long and lean. Step 3: Is this nappy for daytime or night time?

Our nappies have an approximate weight / age range. As all babies are different this is only an average guide.

If your baby has very cuddly thighs and tummy then the next size up will most probably work for your baby. If you have any questions or concerns about thigh size you can email or phone us and we will be able to assist you with this. It is very impotant to buy a nappy that fits well. If you buy nappies that are too large for your baby and there is not a snug fit around the tummy and thighs, leaks will occur.

If you are purchasing your nappies for overnight, the size guage works a little differently. This is because there is more stuffing in the nappy to last all night. This makes the nappy more snug. If your baby is in the higher weight range for the size ( eg: in a medium during the day and is 9.5kg) they will often need to be in the next size up. This will provide more stuffing room and will give the nappy a higher fit around the tummy ensuring a leak free night.

How Many Nappies Do I Need?

Every baby is unique, and it's important that you find the system that is right for you. Our nappies will give you an absorbency of 3-5 hours during the day and 12 hours overnight, so you can work out how many nappies you will need depending on how often your little one needs changing. Remember that newborns need changing more than older children (the guide is usually that every time you feed your newborn, you change them).

I'm Getting Leaks! What Am I Doing Wrong?

Firstly, check that your nappy is prewashed before first use, as this prepares them to absorb properly.

Check that you have the right sized nappy. The nappy should fit around the waist and legs snuggly, but not too tight.

Make sure that no clothing is tucked into any part of the nappy.

If you have a moderate to heavy wetter, you may need to boost the nappy with an extra layer of absorbency. We sell boosters in the inserts section of our website.

For night-time, remember we recommend two inserts in our wool pocket nappies for sizes medium and large.

Make sure that you're changing the nappies often enough.

Test whether you have a build-up of washing powder or nappy creams in the fleece (see below Washing and Maintaining your Ecobubs Nappies)

Remember, leaks from any nappy system, whether cloth or disposable, happen from time to time and we are only a telephone call away to help you with solving them. Speak to our nappy guru Rebecca who knows all the tricks to fixing leakage - there is always a solution 0800 ECOBUBS.

Washing and Maintaining your Ecobubs Nappies

When you take the nappy off your baby, dispose of any solids down the toilet and rinse if necessary. Remove the absorbent insert from the nappy pocket and place both nappy parts into a lidded bucket. Your nappies do not need to be soaked in water or chemicals.

When ready to wash, put your nappies into the machine, add your preferred detergent and put on a warm/hot full cycle (not above 60 degrees celcius). You only need to use 1/3 of the recommend amount of detergent for your nappies to be clean. Using exess detergent or powder can cause your nappies to suffer from build-up on the fleece (see below for the solution to this). You may put your nappies on a rinse cycle first if you choose. We recommend using Canesten Hygiene Laundry Rinse once a week to keep your nappies smelling fresh.

Dry the nappies straight away, by tumble drying or hanging on the washing line or drying rack. Please note nappies will wear quicker if constantly tumble dried.

NOTE: We do not recommend the use of Ecostore powder for our wool pocket nappies. This washing powder is not meant to be used on woollen items and may cause damage the to nappy outer. The Ecostore liquid wash is perfect for use on our nappies. Do NOT use the following on Ecobubs products - bleach, enzyme-based detergents, fabric softner or dry cleaning chemicals.

Over time, your nappies can get a build-up of washing powder and nappy creams in the fleece (We recommend using liners if you are using nappy creams to avoid this) This can cause leakage if not rectified as the build-up makes the fleece less absorbent and urine will come out the sides of your nappy.

If you suspect your nappies do have a build-up, soak in a bucket of water with half a cup of baking soda for 2-3 hours. Then scrub each nappy's fleece with a nappy brush (a nail or dish brush works well) with a little bit of dishwashing liquid. This will break up any washing powder or nappy creams that have lodged into the stay-dry fleece. Then wash nappies as normal.

Isn't washing nappies just as environmentally damaging as using disposables?

This is one of the great myths of the disposable vs. cloth debate. Remember, disposables require resources to be manufactured and transported and the use of energy (output of COA2) and natural resources is far greater than washing with environmentally friendly nappy wash. Even if you use just one washable nappy per day you will stop 730 nappies from being disposed of in the landfill. So yes, you can make a difference.
